10 Water Saving Facts
- Check for leaks in all inside sinks and outside faucets. Studies have shown that leaks account for as much as 5% of all indoor water use.
- Replace your old toilet which probably uses 5-7 gallons per flush (largest water user in homes); if your home was built before 1992 and the toilet has never been replaced, then you do not have a water-efficient, 1.6 gallons per flush toilet. Studies have shown that toilet leaks account for as much as 20% of all indoor water use.
- Replace old washing machines (2nd largest water user in homes). If your washing machine is not Energy Star™ rated, then you are wasting anywhere from 35-50% more water and 50% more energy than the newer models. This change alone can save you money on your water and energy bills per month.
- Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full. You can save over 1,000 gallons per month.
- Take a shower instead of a bath. Taking a bath typically uses 40 gallons of water compared to a shower which uses about 20 gallons of water.
- Try to keep showers to under 5 minutes for more water conservation. You can save 1,000 gallons per month.
- Before lathering up, install a low-flow showerhead which controls the amount of water flow and which is quite inexpensive and more luxurious. This can save you over 500 gallons per week.
- When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing.
- When brushing your teeth or shaving, don’t let the water run.
- When washing or rinsing your car/boat outside using an outside water hose, be sure to attach a nozzle that controls the flow of water.
Sunshine 811 - call before you dig:
Installing a fence or mailbox, starting a garden or building a deck, all require a call to Sunshine 811 at least two full business days before you begin digging to get public facilities marked and located. In fact, it’s the law.
Sunshine 811 notifies its member utility companies to mark their underground facilities where you plan to dig. Sunshine 811 does not locate or mark underground facilities. This is done by the member utility companies or their locators.
